About VIRSAT

We didn't just adopt the safety standard. We wrote it.

Most safety-training vendors build content around a standard someone else created. VIRSAT's Life-Saving Rules training is built by the people who wrote the standard in the first place.

The origin of the standard

The IOGP Life-Saving Rules — now used across the oil & gas industry worldwide — were initiated and established by one of VIRSAT's own founders.

Before they were an industry standard adopted by IOGP, the Life-Saving Rules were research: a study of historic fatal incidents, translated into a small set of rules field workers could actually use. That research became the basis for a 71% fatality reduction within three years of rollout at one major operator — and it's the same foundation VIRSAT's training is built on today.

The founders

Three co-founders. One shared mission.

Willem, Dick, and Bassam founded VIRSAT together — bonded by a shared passion for safety strategy and technological innovation. VIRSAT's road safety work in particular is published, peer-reviewed research, co-authored by the people who actually did it.

Co-Founder & Road Safety Expert

Published co-author on VIRSAT's driving safety research, including "Development of a Six Degrees of Freedom Simulator for Desert Driving Training" (SPE-220265-MS, 2024 SPE International HSE & Sustainability Conference), co-authored with OQ, Oman. Also published earlier research on In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems, now widely used across the oil & gas industry.

Bassam Al Kassar
Bassam Al Kassar
Co-Founder, Road Safety & IVMS Expert

Specializes in road safety and In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS) — the data behind identifying high-risk driving behavior before it causes an incident, and a discipline directly built into the training on the Graded Road DrivingSimulator™ and Driving Pro Black Top™.

Why that matters

Depth of expertise most training vendors don't have.

30+
Years of hands-on Oil & Gas industry experience among the team that designed VIRSAT's learning modules.
100k+
Historic incidents studied to build the hazard content behind VIRSAT's training — not written from a generic safety template.
1
Industry standard, the IOGP Life-Saving Rules, that a VIRSAT founder helped establish — and that VIRSAT's training is built directly on.
Published, not just claimed

The evidence behind the training is peer-reviewed.

SPE 2012

The original Life-Saving Rules field study

Lost time injury frequency down 40%, fatal accident rate down 71% within 3 years — climbing toward ~95% over ten years. The research this page describes, published.
SPE 2024

Co-authored with an oil & gas company in Oman

A real operator in Muscat published research alongside VIRSAT on transforming driver safety training through virtual reality.
RS5C 2025

Road safety research, Leeds conference

Published research on VR driver-safety training for the oil & gas sector, directly relevant to Middle East road fatality rates.
SPE 2024

Development of a Six Degrees of Freedom Simulator for Desert Driving Training

SPE-220265-MS, 2024 SPE International HSE & Sustainability Conference — the Graded Road DrivingSimulator™ paper, co-authored with OQ, Oman, with VIRSAT's Dick Nijen Twilhaar among the co-authors.
TU Delft

PC vs. VR lab trial

A controlled trial at Delft University of Technology had students with no prior topic knowledge experience both PC and VR versions of HabitsAWARE and HabitsPRO. VR scored higher on emotional connection, engagement, recall, and willingness to recommend; a separate icon-recognition test found 90% accuracy.
