HSE Training & Field Verification

Train the habit.
Verify the work.

VIRSAT teaches field workers to recognize fatal risks before they happen, and gives supervisors a way to check — topic by topic — that the work actually got done safely. In any language. On VR, AR, or PC.

Inside VIRSAT's VR training — a worker performs a confined space entry with rescue equipment staged and an attendant standing by, exactly as the Start-Work Check requires.

The VIRSAT method

Learn every risk together.
Check each one in the field.

Real hazards don't come one at a time — a confined space can also involve work at height and a lifting operation. So training covers all the fatal-risk topics together, in one module. HeadSafe then verifies the work topic by topic, permit by permit — sellable together as a complete package, or separately where that's all you need.

The safety loop - How it closes

Safe toWorkLearnthe riskCheckthe workDefectfoundCorrectiveaction

Example: a worker learns why a gas test matters before confined space entry. HeadSafe checks that it was done, before the permit is signed off. If it wasn't — the response is a corrective action, like withdrawing the permit until a qualified gas tester clears it. The loop only closes when the risk is actually resolved.

Learn

Basic workplace HSE training

One comprehensive module covering all nine fatal-risk topics together — because in the real world these risks overlap, not because the topics are separate courses.

  • Awareness level: a fast, gamified format for broad workforce reach
  • Professional level: a full virtual reality operational environment
  • Audio in the worker's own language — English, French, Dutch, German, Arabic, Greek, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, Urdu, and more on request
  • Full VR immersion, or the same content on PC where headsets aren't an option
  • Built on the Life-Saving Rules — or delivered as general workplace HSE training where that framework isn't yet in place
Check

HeadSafe field verification

A hands-free, voice-controlled AR headset that walks a worker or supervisor through an industry standard start-work checklist for that exact topic — at permit prep, at work-start, or as a field audit.

  • Per-topic inspection schemes, with the granularity a permit needs
  • Four-level support: animations, contextual help, an AI assistant trained on your manuals, live expert backup
  • ATEX Zone 1-rated hardware options for hazardous areas
  • Eliminates paperwork; results land straight in your records
Learn + Check, sold together as one package — or standalone, if that's what the job calls for.
Built for high-consequence work

One evidence base.
Four industries.

The Life-Saving Rules methodology and the safety data behind it span oil & gas, construction, and manufacturing — the fatal-risk categories are largely the same wherever the work is high-consequence. Road logistics carries its own dedicated case data.

Built for high-consequence work

We train the pre-work check.

VIRSAT trains the ability to recognize a fatal hazard and run a check before work starts, the way a pilot runs a pre-flight check every time — not from memory of the "correct" answer, but as a habit. Most VR safety training, by contrast, puts a trainee in a first-person scenario and asks them to pick the right answer from a written list — closer to a knowledge quiz in VR.

First-person scenario training

  • Places the trainee inside a simulated task — e.g. confined-space extraction, physical handling
  • Tests recall via written multiple-choice decisions
  • Strong for rehearsing a specific physical task or emergency drill

VIRSAT's approach

  • Trains hazard recognition, pre-work checking, and intervention — before work starts
  • No reading, audio-led, works across a multilingual workforce
  • Paired with HeadSafe, extends into a real field check — not just a training score
Where we don't compete: we don't simulate hands-on physical tasks like a confined-space extraction drill. If that's what you need, it should sit alongside our training, not instead of it.
Choosing a vendor

How VIRSAT compares to other providers

A straight answer to the questions we get most often when a customer is evaluating options.

How is VIRSAT different from other VR safety training companies?

Most competitors stop at training — a VR module, a completion certificate, done. VIRSAT pairs training with HeadSafe, a field verification tool, so the same fatal-risk topic is both taught and checked on site. Few, if any, competitors offer both halves of that loop.

Do competitors publish evidence their training works?

Some publish case studies or internal metrics. VIRSAT's methodology is backed by peer-reviewed, published research — including a paper co-authored with a real operator (OQ, Oman) — rather than marketing claims alone.

What about e-learning or classroom-based providers?

They're typically lower cost per seat but rely on reading and passive attention. VIRSAT's training is audio-led and immersive, in the worker's own language, which research shows drives meaningfully higher focus and retention than e-learning alone.

Can we require VR headsets from every vendor we compare?

You could, but it may unnecessarily narrow your options — VIRSAT's content runs on VR or PC, so hardware reluctance in your organization doesn't have to rule out the training itself.

SPE 2024

Co-authored with an oil & gas company in Oman

A real oil & gas operator in Muscat published results on transforming driver safety training through VR alongside VIRSAT — built on the same Life-Saving Rules field-study base.

SPE 2012

The Shell field study

Lost time injury frequency down 40%, fatal accident rate down 71% within 3 years — against an industry-wide average of 39% over the same period, climbing toward ~95% over ten years. Data spans oil & gas, manufacturing, and construction operations.

RS5C 2025

Road safety, Leeds conference

Published research on VR driver-safety training for the oil & gas sector — directly relevant to the road fatality rates seen across the Middle East, where losses run 5–15x higher than the safest countries.

SPE 2024

Six Degrees of Freedom Simulator for Desert Driving

SPE-220265-MS — the Graded Road DrivingSimulator™, paper, co-authored with OQ, Oman and VIRSAT's own Dick Nijen Twilhaar, describing the world's first driving simulator built for graded roads.

TU DELFT

PC vs. VR lab trial

A controlled trial at Delft University of Technology had students with no prior topic knowledge experience both PC and VR versions of HabitsAWARE and HabitsPRO. VR scored higher on emotional connection, engagement, recall, and willingness to recommend; a separate icon-recognition test found 90% accuracy.
