VR Games: A New Way to Make Work Significantly Safer

The field study behind the Life-Saving Rules

A large field study covering more than 500,000 people worldwide found that teaching field workers to recognize the most hazardous work activities in their industry — combined with a hard rule to only proceed once those hazards were controlled — saved lives at scale. The most dangerous situations were identified from a large database of historic fatal incidents and translated into a small set of rules workers could actually apply in the field: the Life-Saving Rules.

IOGP adapted these rules as an international standard in 2012, then rejuvenated and standardized them to nine rules in 2018.

Training is only as good as its weakest link

The Life-Saving Rules only work if the people creating work conditions understand them — not just the field workers most exposed to risk. A procurement team that omits HSE clauses from a contractor's scope, without realizing it, can leave that contractor's budget (and training) short of what the rules require — pushing a field worker toward the fastest way to get a job done rather than the safest.

Why VR fits this problem better than the alternatives

Various techniques exist to expose workers to simulated high-risk situations, but few combine cost-effectiveness, zero real-world risk, and the ability to actually test a trainee's reaction and intervention — VR does all three. Research from PwC comparing VR to classroom and e-learning found VR learners completed training 4x faster, reported 275% more confidence applying what they learned, felt 3.75x more emotionally connected to the material, and stayed 4x more focused than their e-learning peers.
